For the best experience, readers should follow the narrative chronology established by the author. Although the publication dates of individual books might suggest a different sequence due to how the books were originally packaged and later split, the official reading order is as follows:

The Reorganization: Publication vs. Reading Order
If you look at the publication years of these books, you will notice a strange discrepancy: The Last Pendragon was released in 2010, followed by The Pendragon's Quest in 2011, and then several books in 2016 and 2017. This can lead to significant confusion for new readers buying individual volumes.
This discrepancy exists because Sarah Woodbury originally released the series as a set of multi-part compilation volumes. The first volume, titled The Last Pendragon, was a compilation of three shorter novellas. The second volume, The Pendragon's Quest, was a compilation that contained four novellas. Later, Woodbury reorganized and republished these stories as individual, serialized books to make the series structure more uniform, while writing the final installment, Legend of the Pendragon, to conclude the saga in 2017.
Because of this, older printings and online reviews might describe the saga as a trilogy or a two-volume series. However, modern digital and print editions are sold as the eight individual books listed above. If you are starting the series today, you should follow the numerical order (1 through 8) rather than the original publication years of the individual volumes.
Book-by-Book Breakdown of the Saga
1. The Last Pendragon (2010)
This is where the journey begins. We are introduced to Cadwaladr ap Cadwallon (Cade), the last remaining heir of King Arthur, who is living in exile in 7th-century Wales. Cade is touched by the sidhe (the fairy folk) and is forced to confront both mortal enemies who have usurped his father's throne and supernatural forces that wish to destroy his lineage. Along the way, he meets Rhiann, the illegitimate daughter of his enemy, who becomes his companion and love interest.
2. The Pendragon's Blade (2016)
In the second installment, Cade and Rhiann's bond grows stronger as they deal with the fallout of their initial victory. The supernatural dangers increase as dark forces continue to hunt Arthur's descendants. Cade must learn to wield the magical blade that represents his heritage and his burden.
3. Song of the Pendragon (2016)
This book pits Cade directly against the dark god Arawn and his terrifying legions. The mythology of Wales comes to the forefront here, as Cade must venture into mythic realms to secure the safety of his people and prove he is worthy of the Pendragon title.
4. The Pendragon's Quest (2011)
Cade struggles to unite the fractured kingdoms of medieval Wales. The Saxons pose a constant threat to the eastern borders, while internal treachery threatens to undo everything Cade has fought to build. The quest for unity requires both political maneuvering and physical valor.
5. The Pendragon's Champions (2016)
The conflict reaches a new level as Cade gathers his champions. In this book, the focus expands to include the loyal warriors who fight by Cade's side. The battles become larger, and the stakes are raised as the Saxons push deeper into Welsh territory.
6. Rise of the Pendragon (2016)
With Wales on the brink of collapse, Cade must rise to become the leader his people need. This installment features intense action and strategic battles as Cade attempts to turn the tide against the invading Saxon forces and their dark allies.
7. The Pendragon's Challenge (2016)
Cade faces his greatest personal and political challenges yet. The clash between the old pagan gods and the rising tide of Christianity threatens to tear his alliances apart from within, even as the Saxons prepare for a final push.
8. Legend of the Pendragon (2017)
The epic conclusion to the saga. Cade faces a final, climactic battle that will decide the fate of Wales and the legacy of King Arthur. All the plotlines, romantic arcs, and mythic conflicts converge in a satisfying resolution that seals Cade's place in history and legend.
What to Know Before You Start
Sarah Woodbury is an anthropologist by training, and her deep knowledge of Welsh history and Celtic mythology shines through in her writing. While the series is a historical fantasy, it is grounded in the real history of 7th-century Wales, a time when the Britons were fighting a losing battle against the Anglo-Saxon invasion.
Unlike traditional Arthurian retellings that focus on Lancelot, Guinevere, and the round table, this series takes place generations after Arthur's fall. It focuses on the historical figure Cadwaladr ap Cadwallon, reimagining him as Arthur's direct descendant who must navigate a world where the old magic is fading but still highly dangerous.
