If you are planning to dive into the high-stakes, magical world of the Fells, the recommended reading path is simple and direct: read the books in publication order. The saga is divided into two distinct, sequential quartets. You should start with the original Seven Realms series to build a solid foundation, and then proceed directly to the sequel series, Shattered Realms, which takes place twenty years later.
Because the second series features the children and successors of the original characters and builds directly on the political shifts and magical changes resulting from the first series' climax, jumping straight into the sequel will majorly spoil the ending of the original quartet. - The Gray Wolf Throne (2011): The political situation escalates to a boiling point. Raisa returns to Fellsmarch to claim her birthright, facing forced marriages, treasonous wizards, and the ever-present threat of civil war.
- The Crimson Crown (2012): The high-stakes finale of the original series. Han has risen to a position of power, and together with Raisa, they must navigate a final confrontation with dark magic and ancient enemies to save the Fells.
The Sequel Saga: Shattered Realms Series
Published between 2016 and 2019, the Shattered Realms quartet expands the world beyond the Fells, bringing in the neighboring kingdoms of Arden and Tamron. Set roughly two decades after the events of The Crimson Crown, it introduces a new generation of heroes—including the children of the original cast—alongside returning characters. The reading order for this sequel series is:
- Flamecaster (2016): Focuses on Adrian sul'Han (known as Ash), a wizard-healer and the son of Han and Raisa, and Jenna Bandrea, a young woman with a magical mark who is running from the ruthless King of Arden.

- Stormcaster (2018): Follows Evan Strangward, a sailor and spy with elemental powers, and Destry Windrider, a fierce clan warrior. Their journeys weave through the growing international conflict that threatens to consume the realms.
- Deathcaster (2019): The epic conclusion to the sequel series. The threads of Arden, the Fells, the clans, and the wizards come together as the heroes make a final stand to prevent total devastation and secure a lasting peace.
Chronological vs. Publication Order & Caveats
Fortunately for readers, there are no complicated prequels or out-of-order short stories in this universe. The chronological order matches the publication order exactly. Cinda Williams Chima originally drew inspiration for the Seven Realms from an unpublished, adult high fantasy draft titled The Star-Marked Warder, but that material was fully refashioned into the novels we have today, leaving no external stories or tie-in novellas to track down.
The only major caveat is the twenty-year timeline jump between the original series and the sequel series. Although some marketing copy suggests that Flamecaster can be read as a standalone starting point, doing so is highly discouraged. You will miss the deep emotional resonance of seeing older characters in new roles, and you will immediately learn the fates and ultimate pairings of Han and Raisa, ruining the suspense of the original series' final books.

The Fells is a fascinating world built on a delicate, historical truce between two groups: the magical Wizards (who once nearly destroyed the world during the Ruination) and the indigenous Mountain Clans (who hold the keys to natural resources and spiritual magic). The monarchy of the Fells is historically ruled by a Queen, advised by a Wizard Council, and bound to the Clans. This intricate political structure drives the plots of both series.
