This book introduces Ashen, a young girl raised in a swamp by a witch-healer. She is the prophesied "Daughter of Ash," the last hope of a devastated clan whose totem tree is withering. She must step forward to claim her destiny and challenge the power-hungry Queen Ysa of the House of Yew.
Knight or Knave (2001)
Following the old king's death, his foolish son Prince Florian takes the throne while his mother, Queen Ysa, continues to manipulate the court. Ashen is forced into a marriage with the Sea-Rover Obern to neutralize her political threat, and the story introduces Rohan, who must navigate the treacherous courtly environment.
A Crown Disowned (2002)
Geological disasters strike the land, and a severe threat emerges from the far North: the Ice Dragon Riders. Queen Ysa is forced to abandon her schemes temporarily to unite the armies of the four houses under a single banner, while Rohan works to defend his allies from both external foes and internal betrayal.
Dragon Blade (2005)
Set a year after the defeat of the "Great Foulness," the earth has begun to heal, and the signet rings of the four houses are returned to their rightful heirs. Ashen, now NordornQueen, hopes for a peaceful future with her husband and newborn son, but new threats quickly arise.
The Knight of the Red Beard (2008)
The final book focuses on the next generation of the royal family. The peace established by Gaurin and Ashen is put to the test when their thirteen-year-old power-hungry daughter Elin aligns with the villainous Ysa, while her younger brother Mikkel is swept up in an adventure at sea after stowing away on a ship.
What to Know Before You Start
This series is a collaboration between the legendary science fiction and fantasy pioneer Andre Norton (often called the "Grande Dame of Science Fiction") and author Sasha Miller. It is important to note that Andre Norton passed away in March 2005. While the fourth book, Dragon Blade, was published around the time of her death, the final book, The Knight of the Red Beard, was completed posthumously by Sasha Miller based on their joint plans and Norton's vision.
