How to Read the Will Robie Series
David Baldacci’s Will Robie series is best read in publication order. Because the books follow a tight narrative progression detailing Will Robie’s character growth, evolving relationships, and long-term career shifts, jumping around will spoil major plot points and character fates.
The main series consists of five full-length novels and one crossover novella. In addition, characters from the series make a major crossover appearance in a later novel from another David Baldacci series. Below is the recommended reading path to experience the story as Baldacci intended.
1. The Innocent (2012)
This is where the story begins. Will Robie is introduced as the U.S. government’s ultimate covert hitman—a cold, calculated operator who eliminates national security threats without question. However, his life unravels when he refuses to pull the trigger on a target who is a mother with a young child. Suddenly branded a traitor, Robie goes on the run from his own agency. Along the way, he crosses paths with Julie Getty, a sharp-tongued teenage runaway fleeing the scene of her parents' murder. Together, they must navigate a massive conspiracy reaching the highest levels of the government to clear their names and survive.
2. The Hit (2013)
In the second book, Robie is tasked with hunting down one of his own. Jessica Reel is a fellow elite CIA government assassin who has apparently gone rogue, killing her handlers. She is just as lethal and stealthy as Robie, making her his most dangerous target yet. But as Robie tracks her across the country, he begins to suspect that Reel isn’t a traitor at all, but rather someone trying to expose a massive betrayal within the agency itself. This book marks a major turning point, introducing Reel as a primary figure in Robie's life.
3. Bullseye (2014)
Published as an ebook-exclusive novella between the events of The Hit and The Target, this story serves as a thrilling crossover event. While in Washington, D.C., Will Robie accidentally crosses paths with Oliver Stone (also known as John Carter), the legendary leader of the Camel Club from David Baldacci’s other hit series. The two operatives find themselves trapped inside a bank during a high-stakes heist, forcing them to pool their lethal talents to defuse the situation and prevent a political assassination attempt.
4. The Target (2014)
Following the events of The Hit, the President of the United States directly calls upon Robie and Jessica Reel for an incredibly risky mission. The U.S. government wants to eliminate a global threat by striking at the heart of North Korea. While Robie and Reel undergo brutal training for this near-impossible job, they are targeted by a vengeful enemy from within their own government. To make matters worse, a highly trained assassin is dispatched to eliminate them before they can even launch their mission.
5. The Guilty (2015)
This installment takes a deeply personal turn for Robie. After a mission in London goes wrong and he finds himself unable to pull the trigger, Robie realizes his psychological edge is slipping. To find his footing, he returns to his hometown of Cantrell, Mississippi—a place he hasn't visited in over two decades. There, he discovers that his estranged father, Dan Robie, a local judge, has been arrested for murder. To save his father and confront his own past, Robie must work with Jessica Reel to uncover the dark secrets hiding in the town's shadows.
6. End Game (2017)
The fifth novel brings the core series to an explosive climax. Roger Walton, the agency handler known to Robie and Reel only as the "Blue Man," goes missing while on vacation in the remote, hardscrabble town of Grand, Colorado. Sensing trouble, Robie and Reel head to the Rocky Mountains to find him. They discover a town dominated by radical factions, white supremacists, and military-grade weaponry. To rescue their mentor, the duo must wage a full-scale war against local syndicates and international forces alike.
The Amos Decker Crossover: Walk the Wire (2020)
Although End Game is the final standalone novel in the Will Robie series, Robie's story doesn't end there. In 2020, David Baldacci published Walk the Wire, the sixth installment in his Amos Decker (Memory Man) series. Set in a booming oil town in North Dakota, Decker and his partner Alex Jamison are investigating a series of gruesome murders and government secrets. Will Robie and Jessica Reel appear in the novel to assist Decker when his life is on the line. Because of major character development, it is highly recommended to read the Will Robie series up to End Game before diving into Walk the Wire.
