Julia Hart, an ambitious young editor, visits McAllister on his remote Mediterranean island to republish the collection. As she reads through the stories with him, she begins to notice inconsistencies and clues that seem to point to a real-life, unsolved murder from the past.
This book is highly structured, alternating between Julia and Grant's conversations and the seven short mystery stories themselves. It is a perfect starting point for readers who enjoy literary games, puzzles, and classic detective tropes.
Ink Ribbon Red (2024 / 2025)
Pavesi's second novel shifts focus to a contemporary, yet classically styled, locked-room thriller. The plot follows a group of friends who gather at a country house for a birthday party. To pass the time, they play a game where everyone writes a short murder mystery story starring the other guests. However, the line between fiction and reality blurs when a real murder occurs, forcing the guests to dissect their own stories to uncover the killer among them.
While still deeply analytical and meta-fictional, Ink Ribbon Red offers a more traditional suspense narrative compared to the highly structural layout of Pavesi's debut, making it an excellent follow-up.
