The Recommended Reading Order
For the best experience, the Gin Sullivan series should be read in order of publication. Because Gin's personal journey, her family's past, and her evolving relationship with Jake develop over the course of the trilogy, starting from the beginning is key to appreciating the emotional depth and overall narrative arc.
- Dark Road Home (2016) - The debut novel that introduces Chicago medical examiner Gin Sullivan as she returns to her hometown of Trumbull, Pennsylvania, after the remains of her long-missing younger sister, Lily, are discovered.
- All the Secret Places (2017) - Sidelined and staying in Trumbull, Gin is drawn back into forensic investigating when a dead body is unearthed beneath a home built by her high school sweetheart's construction company.
- In the Darkest Hour (2018) - The third installment brings Gin face-to-face with a complex web of drug abuse, theft, and murder after Jake's estranged mother is found dead in a local motel.
What to Know Before You Start
Anna Carlisle's mysteries are grounded in forensic authenticity and psychological tension. The protagonist, Virginia "Gin" Sullivan, is a former Chicago medical examiner who is forced to confront small-town secrets and buried family trauma. The books blend gritty detective and medical examiner work with deeply personal character development.
While each book features a self-contained primary murder investigation, the overarching narrative dealing with Gin's family history and her relationship with Jake makes reading the series in sequence highly recommended.
Author Identity and Similar Names
Readers should note that the American suspense author Anna Carlisle, who lives in Northern California and works as a teacher, is sometimes confused with a UK-based writer of the same name who authored the regional walking guidebook Gone Walkabout: 24 Walks in the Upper Calder Valley. The suspense novelist has only published the three Gin Sullivan novels.
