Where to Start with Anna Elliott
Anna Elliott’s writing spans several distinct sub-genres, making her starting point highly dependent on your personal taste. Because her series generally do not overlap across genres, you can safely begin with any of her main pathways:
- For Arthurian Fantasy Fans: Start with the complete Twilight of Avalon trilogy, beginning with Twilight of Avalon (2009). This is her solo debut and features a strong feminist retelling of the Tristan and Isolde myth set in sub-Roman Britain.
- For Jane Austen Lovers: Start with Georgiana Darcy's Diary (2011), the first book in her Pride and Prejudice Chronicles, which continues Austen's classic tale from the perspective of Mr. Darcy’s younger sister.
- For Mystery Buffs: Begin with The Last Moriarty (2014) or the prequel novella The Crown Jewel Mystery (2017) to dive into her massive Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mystery series, co-authored with her father, Charles Veley.
1. Twilight of Avalon Trilogy
This is Anna Elliott’s acclaimed historical fantasy trilogy. It reimagines Arthurian legend from the perspective of Isolde, the daughter of Modred, combining Celtic history, romance, and political intrigue. This series should be read strictly in chronological/publication order as it follows a continuous narrative arc.
- Twilight of Avalon (2009)
- Dark Moon of Avalon (2010)
- Sunrise of Avalon (2011)
2. Jane Austen Sequels & Regency Mysteries
Elliott has written several historical romances and cozy mysteries set in the Regency era, inspired by the works of Jane Austen. They are divided into two main groups, along with a standalone historical romance series.
Pride & Prejudice Chronicles
These books continue the lives of characters from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. They should be read in order, as Georgiana’s diary spans two volumes before the focus shifts to Kitty Bennet.
- Georgiana Darcy's Diary (2011)
- Pemberley to Waterloo (2011)
- Kitty Bennet's Diary (2013)
Sense & Sensibility Mysteries
A spin-off mystery series following Margaret Dashwood, the youngest sister from Austen's Sense and Sensibility, as she navigates romance and amateur sleuthing.
- Margaret Dashwood's Diary (2014)
Susanna and the Spy Books
A two-part series blending traditional gothic fiction, smugglers, and Regency romance. These should be read in order.
- Susanna and the Spy (2011)
- London Calling (2012)
3. The Sherlock Holmes & Lucy James Mysteries
Co-authored with Charles Veley, this long-running mystery series introduces Lucy James, an independent American actress who discovers she is the daughter of Sherlock Holmes. Together, they solve crimes in late-Victorian London. While the individual cases are self-contained, reading them in order is highly recommended to follow the evolving character dynamics and recurring subplots.
Note on prequels: The Crown Jewel Mystery is a prequel novella that takes place before the events of The Last Moriarty, though it was published later (2017). Purists may want to read it first, while others can start with the first full novel, The Last Moriarty.
