Where to Start: The Main Entry Points
For most readers, the absolute best place to start is with Justice Calling, the first book in Annie Bellet's signature urban fantasy series, The Twenty-Sided Sorceress. It serves as the perfect introduction to her signature blend of geek culture, fast-paced action, and magical intrigue. If you prefer high-fantasy adventures over modern settings, begin with Witch Hunt, the opening novella of The Gryphonpike Chronicles.
The Twenty-Sided Sorceress Reading Order
This USA Today bestselling series follows Jade Crow, a powerful sorceress who hides from her abusive, power-hungry ex-boyfriend by running a comic book and gaming shop in Idaho. The series titles are heavily inspired by role-playing games. It is highly recommended to read this series in order of publication, as the overarching plot is highly serialized.
While the first seven books were originally written as shorter novels, they have also been collected into two major omnibus volumes: Level Grind (containing Books 1-4) and Boss Fight (containing Books 5-7).
- Justice Calling (Book 1) (2014) - Jade is trying to keep a low profile, but local werewolf troubles force her to use her magic.
- Murder of Crows (Book 2) (2014) - Jade's past begins to catch up with her as sorcerers arrive in her small town.
- Pack of Lies (Book 3) (2014) - Tensions rise as werewolf politics and ancient rivalries threaten Jade's sanctuary.
- Hunting Season (Book 4) (2014) - Jade must actively hunt a threat to protect her friends and her gaming group.
- Heartache (Book 5) (2015) - A deeper look into the characters' vulnerabilities as the magical stakes escalate.
- Thicker Than Blood (Book 6) (2015) - Family ties and old debts return to haunt the crew.
- Magic to the Bone (Book 7) (2016) - A massive confrontation that changes Jade's life forever.
- Harper's Tale (Book 7.5 / Book 11) (2022) - Officially published later but chronologically set around the events of Book 7, this companion novel focuses on the perspective of Harper, the tiger-shifter. Read this here or after Book 10 for a change of pace.
- Dungeon Crawl (Book 8) (2017) - Jade and her allies take the fight directly to a perilous magical dungeon.
- River of No Return (Book 9) (2018) - The aftermath of the dungeon crawl forces Jade to make difficult sacrifices.
- Balancing the Scales (Book 10) (2020) - The epic conclusion to Jade Crow's main story arc.
Spin-offs & World Tie-Ins
- Bad Moon on the Rise (Six-Gun Shifters Book 1) (2020) - Set in the same universe, this standalone spin-off follows Kira Jones, a tiger-shifter bounty hunter and the sister of Alek (a main character in the Twenty-Sided Sorceress series). It can be read independently at any time, but is best enjoyed after finishing the main series to appreciate the shared world.
The Gryphonpike Chronicles
If you are looking for classic, high-fantasy adventure, this series of six novellas is the perfect fit. It follows Killer, a mute elven archer, and her mismatched band of mercenary companions. For convenience, all six stories are also available in a single compilation titled The Complete Gryphonpike Chronicles.
- Witch Hunt (2012)
- Twice Drowned Dragon (2012)
- A Stone's Throw (2012)
- Dead of Knight (2013)
- Brood Mother (2017)
- Into the North (2017)
Other Paranormal Mysteries and Urban Fantasy Series
Bellet has also written several shorter or standalone series that showcase her range as a speculative fiction author:
The Remy Pigeon Series
This paranormal mystery series features Remy Pigeon, a Creole gentleman in New Orleans with the psychometric ability to read the history of any object he touches. This ability frequently drags him into magical danger despite his desire for a quiet life.
- Dusk and Shiver (2012) - A collection of stories introducing Remy and his supernatural investigations.
- Flashover (2014) - A longer adventure where Remy deals with voodun sorcerers and dark magic.
Pyrrh Considerable Crimes Division
A fantasy-noir hybrid set in the Free City of Pyrrh, where a police detective and his non-human partner investigate complex magical cases.
- Avarice (2012) - The first installment introducing Cordonate Parshan Koury and Zhivana Nedrogovna. No further books have been published, but it stands as a fun, self-contained fantasy police procedural.
Cymru That Was
An epic fantasy series heavily influenced by Welsh mythology and medieval lore, demonstrating Bellet's background in Medieval Studies.
- A Heart in Sun and Shadow (2011) - The first novel in the planned duology. The sequel, The Raven King, remains on hold pending the author's schedule and Patreon support.
