The Recommended Reading Path
For readers new to Colleen Houck, the best entry point is her flagship series, The Tiger Saga (also known as the Tiger's Curse series). The recommended path is to follow the publication order rather than chronological order. Even though the series contains prequels and companion novellas, reading them out of publication sequence can ruin major twists and emotional beats intended by the author.
The Tiger Saga
This series blends YA romance, high adventure, and Indian mythology. It follows Kelsey Hayes as she travels to India and attempts to break a 300-year-old curse binding two royal brothers, Ren and Kishan, to live as shape-shifting tigers.
Recommended Tiger Saga Reading Order
- Tiger's Curse (2011) - The entry point where Kelsey meets the white tiger Ren and begins her quest.
- Tiger's Quest (2011) - The second book, where Kishan (the black tiger) steps into a larger role as the stakes and romantic tension rise.
- Tiger's Voyage (2011) - The third installment, featuring an epic ocean journey and mythological trials.
- Tiger's Destiny (2012) - The fourth book, which serves as the original conclusion to Kelsey and Ren's central quest.
- Tiger's Promise (2014) - A prequel novella detailing the backstory of the curse. Crucial Note: Do not read this first! It contains massive spoilers for the main series and is best enjoyed after Tiger's Destiny.
- Tiger's Dream (2018) - The official fifth and final book of the series, focusing on Kishan's journey across time and space to wrap up outstanding threads from the original quadrilogy.
Chronological vs. Publication Order Caveat
While the chronological timeline starts with Tiger's Promise, beginning here is highly discouraged. The prequel assumes familiarity with the mythology of the curse and gives away critical mystery elements that drive the tension of the first four novels. Reading it fifth serves as the perfect emotional bridge before diving into Kishan's final chapter in Tiger's Dream.
The Tiger's Tale Series (Slavic Mythology Spin-Off)
In 2024, Colleen Houck expanded her tiger-shifting universe with a brand-new series set in a different part of the world. Moving away from Indian mythology, this spin-off centers on Russian/Slavic folklore and the magical Kievian Empire.
- Tiger's Tale (2024) - Introduces twin sisters Anastasia and Verusha Stepanov, who are cursed to transform into Siberian tigers.
- Tiger's Trek (2025) - The sequel, following the sisters and their companions into a dangerous dreamworld to save their empire.
Reading Advice: Although set in the same general universe of shape-shifting tigers, this subseries is designed to stand on its own and can be read independently of the original Tiger Saga without missing major plot points.
The Reawakened Series
After finding success with Indian mythology, Houck turned her attention to Egyptian lore with the Reawakened series. The story centers on Lilliana Young, an American teenager who accidentally awakens a mummy prince named Amon and becomes embroiled in a mythological battle to save the world.
Reawakened Reading Order
- Reawakened (2015) - The first book introducing Lily and Prince Amon.
- Recreated (2016) - Lily's journey to the Egyptian underworld to rescue her prince.
- Reignited (2017) - A prequel companion novella focusing on the history of the Egyptian gods. It can be read after Recreated or saved for the end of the series.
- Reunited (2017) - The final book in the trilogy that resolves Lily and Amon's fate.
Colleen Houck's Standalone Novels
Outside of her primary mythological sagas, Houck has written two standalone novels across different genres. These require no prior reading and can be picked up at any time:
- The Lantern's Ember (2018) - A young adult fantasy adventure inspired by the legend of Sleepy Hollow and Halloween lore, featuring a guardian of the portal to the Otherworld and a young witch.
- Terraformer (2020) - A futuristic young adult science fiction novel set on the alien planet Crillain IV, focusing on a botanist named Astra Meador who wakes early from hypersleep.
