Picture a Chinese-American wordsmith weaving tales of identity and displacement with a poet’s precision—meet Jenny Xie! Born in Anhui, China, and raised in New Jersey, Xie has captivated readers with her award-winning poetry and heartfelt novels. Her work, from the celebrated Eye Level to the tender Holding Pattern, explores the human condition with a lyrical touch that feels like a warm conversation.
The Making of Jenny Xie
Jenny Xie was born in Hefei, Anhui, and immigrated to the U.S. at age four with her grandmother, settling in Piscataway, New Jersey. Growing up in a vibrant Chinese immigrant community, she spoke Mandarin at home but gradually lost fluency as English took over. Literature became her sanctuary, a space to explore imagination away from her family’s STEM-focused world. At Princeton University, she honed her craft, later earning an MFA from New York University. Her travels in Asia, teaching in Hong Kong and working in Cambodia, shaped her early writing, infusing it with themes of solitude and journeying.
Jenny Xie’s Unforgettable Stories
Xie’s debut poetry collection, Eye Level (2018), is a dazzling exploration of seeing and being seen. Winner of the 2017 Walt Whitman Award and a finalist for the National Book Award, it captures fleeting moments in places like Phnom Penh and Corfu with vivid imagery. Her chapbook, Nowhere to Arrive (2017), which won the Drinking Gourd Chapbook Poetry Prize, delves into travel and isolation. The Rupture Tense (2022), another National Book Award finalist, tackles memory and the Chinese Cultural Revolution’s lingering echoes, inspired by photographer Li Zhensheng’s hidden archives. Xie’s debut novel, Holding Pattern (2023), shifts to prose, weaving a witty, heartfelt story of a mother and daughter navigating love and alienation. Her style—lyrical, introspective, and politically nuanced—bridges personal and collective histories.
Xie’s poetry dances with perspective, often questioning the ethics of observation, while her prose sparkles with emotional depth. Whether exploring diaspora, family ties, or cultural memory, her work feels like a quiet revelation, inviting readers to pause and reflect.
