The Recommended Reading Order
To get the most out of the series, you should read the Aloysius Archer books in their publication order. The narrative follows a strict chronological line, tracking Archer's journey from a parolee to an established private investigator in post-war America.
- One Good Deed (2019) – Set in 1949, introducing Archer as he is paroled from prison.
- A Gambling Man (2021) – Set in 1949/1950, following Archer's move to California.
- Dream Town (2022) – Set on the eve of 1953, exploring a mystery in Hollywood.
Timeline and Chronology Details
David Baldacci writes this series in a linear sequence, meaning publication order and chronological order are identical. Starting with One Good Deed is highly recommended because it establishes Archer's backstory—specifically his service in WWII and his wrongful imprisonment—which defines his character. Furthermore, key relationships, such as his partnership with aspiring actress Liberty Callahan, develop sequentially across the trilogy.
Spin-Offs, Crossovers, and Co-authored Books
Unlike some of David Baldacci's other thriller series, the Aloysius Archer books are written entirely by Baldacci without co-authors. Because the series takes place in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Archer does not cross over with contemporary Baldacci characters like Amos Decker or Atlee Pine. Currently, there are no short stories or spin-off series set in this mid-century universe.
Future of the Series
For readers who have finished the first three novels, a fourth, currently untitled Aloysius Archer book is scheduled for release in April 2027. This will continue his detective adventures further into the 1950s.
