Where to Start with Alex Albrinck
If you are new to Alex Albrinck’s science fiction universe, you have two primary entry points depending on your favorite sci-fi subgenres. Because his major series are set in the same universe but represent vastly different eras, your starting point will define your reading experience:
- For Technothrillers, Secret Societies, and Time Travel: Start with A Question of Will, the first book of the Aliomenti Saga. This is Albrinck's signature work, setting up the rules of the universe, advanced technology, and human potential.
- For Post-Apocalyptic Survival and Fast-Paced Thrills: Start with Activate, the first novel in the Ravagers series. This series offers a gritty, episodic struggle against microscopic destructive machines.
The Aliomenti Saga Reading Order
The Aliomenti Saga is an epic eight-book story (often packaged as nine books including a prequel novella) that follows Will Stark, a billionaire who discovers a clandestine organization with incredible power and advanced nanotechnology. The series covers centuries and incorporates elements of time travel, making the sequence crucial to follow.
While the first novel published was Preserving Hope in 2012, it is actually Book 2 in the story sequence. The author recommends starting with A Question of Will (published in 2013) to properly understand the foundation of the world. Additionally, there is a prequel novella titled Hunting Will (often numbered as Book 0.5) that provides early backstory, though it is usually best enjoyed after you have read the first book or two.
Here is the recommended reading path for the Aliomenti Saga:
- A Question of Will (Book 1) – Will Stark is targeted by a secret society, beginning his transformation and discovery of his energy-manipulating abilities.
- Preserving Hope (Book 2) – Will navigates a secluded, medieval-style village run by a leader who uses villagers as test subjects to unlock human potential.
- Ascent of the Aliomenti (Book 3) – The organization expands its reach and influence, detailing how they rose to prominence.
- Birth of the Alliance (Book 4) – Will works to build a resistance against the darker factions of the secret society.
- Preserving Will (Book 5) – The stakes rise as Will fights to keep his allies and his ideals safe.
- Stark Cataclysm (Book 6) – A turning point where the fragile balance of power collapses under global conflict.
- Convergence (Book 7) – Different timelines, characters, and subplots meet in a dramatic collision.
- Adam's Journey (Book 8) – The final chapter focusing on the legacy of the saga and the ultimate destiny of its key figures.
Note: You can read the prequel novella, Hunting Will (Book 0.5), either before starting the main saga or between Book 1 and Book 2 to add flavor to the backstory of Will's adversaries.
The Ravagers Reading Order
Set in the same universe but in a distant future, The Ravagers follows a society rebuilding after near-extinction events. When two large nations stand on the brink of war, an elite shadow cabal releases "the Ravagers"—unstoppable microscopic killing machines. The story shifts perspectives among five characters trying to survive.
Unlike the Aliomenti Saga, this series is highly linear and episodic. You must read it in strict publication order:
- Activate (Book 1) – The microscopic machines are unleashed, and the five main characters begin their race for survival.
- Detonate (Book 2) – The crisis escalates as communities crumble under the weight of the nanotech threat.
- Deviate (Book 3) – Key survivors attempt to find loopholes and weaknesses in the Ravagers' program.
- Retaliate (Book 4) – Humanity starts fighting back against both the machine swarm and the cabal that controls it.
- Eradicate (Book 5) – The final battle to purge the Ravagers and secure a future for the human race.
Connecting the Universe: The Disruption Gap
Because the Aliomenti Saga deals with the birth of advanced nanotechnology and The Ravagers takes place in a future ravaged by it, they are connected. However, there is a large chronological gap between the end of the Aliomenti Saga and the start of the Ravagers.
Albrinck announced a bridging series, tentatively titled the Disruption Saga, to fill this narrative void. According to the author, the manuscript is largely drafted but has been delayed due to life events. Since it remains unpublished, readers do not need to wait for it; moving from the Aliomenti Saga directly into The Ravagers works perfectly well.
Anthologies and Short Stories
For completionists, Albrinck has also contributed to the popular Future Chronicles anthologies edited by Samuel Peralta. While not required to understand the main series, they offer quick, standalone sci-fi adventures that showcase his signature themes:
- "The Turing Cube" (published in The A.I. Chronicles, 2015) – A short story focusing on artificial intelligence and human cognition.
- "Transparency" (published in The Dragon Chronicles, 2015) – A sci-fi twist on dragon lore and advanced tech.
