Where to Start Reading Donna Grant

This is Grant’s flagship series, focusing on the ancient Dragon Kings who have hidden their existences from humanity at their Dreagan estate in Scotland. Dark Kings overlaps heavily with the latter half of the Dark Warriors series. For the best experience, start with the three introductory novellas: Dark Craving, Night’s Awakening, and Dawn’s Desire (often compiled together in the volume Dark Heat), before diving into the first full-length novel, Darkest Flame (2014).
4. Reapers Series (Books 1–16)
Running parallel to the Dark Kings, this series follows the Reapers—mortals chosen by Death to keep the balance between realms and hunt down rogue Fae. 5. Dragon Kings Series (Books 1–10)

6. Skye Druids and Elven Kingdoms
The newest expansions to the Dark Universe. Skye Druids (beginning with Iron Ember, 2022) and Elven Kingdoms (beginning with Rising Sun, 2024) continue to build out the mythology, bringing new magic and factions into the fold.
The Louisiana Bayou Universe: Chiasson & LaRue
For readers who prefer a swampy, humid setting over the cold Scottish Highlands, Donna Grant has a smaller, closely interconnected duology of series set in Louisiana. These follow local families of hunters and shifters fighting supernatural threats:
- Chiasson Series: Follows a family of hunters in the bayou. Read this series starting with Wild Fever (2014) and finishing with Wild Rapture (2017).
- LaRue Series: Focuses on werewolf/shifter mythology, beginning with Moon Kissed (2014) and continuing through Moon Bound (2017).
Because the Chiasson and LaRue families live in the same area and team up to fight the same evils, readers recommend alternating between the two series by publication year for the most cohesive story.
Publication Order vs. Chronological Order Caveats
For the vast majority of Donna Grant's work, publication order is the most logical and spoiler-free way to read. However, there are a few chronological exceptions to keep in mind:
- The Dragon Kings Prequel: In the Dragon Kings series, the book Ignite the Magic was published in 2023, but it actually serves as a prequel to the entire subseries. - Novellas and Short Stories: Grant has written numerous novellas (often through 1001 Dark Nights) that bridge the gaps between major novels. While they are not always mandatory to understand the main plot, they provide crucial relationship development for side characters.
What to Know Before You Start
Grant's romance novels are heavily serialized. While each book features a central couple whose romance resolves with a Happy Ever After (HEA) by the final page, the overarching fantasy conflict, villain plots, and world lore progress continuously from book to book.
